It all started in Estonia in 2008 when 50,000 people came together under the slogan “clean the whole country in five hours". This inspired people around the world to follow the same "one country, one day" formula.
Now, 11 years later, the idea has grown into Let’s Do It World (LDIW), a global movement with millions of volunteers and charismatic leadership. Why? The simplicity of the Estonian idea and the "let's do this now" attitude is appealing – anyone can pick up trash! But World Cleanup Day is naturally so much more than the mere act of cleaning. Now the initiative unites 157 countries for a cleaner planet and is one of the biggest civic movements – perhaps the most important – of our time.
The Swedish version of World Cleanup Day is organised by the Keep Sweden Tidy Foundation (Håll Sverige Rent), which is why it’s called Keep Sweden Tidy Day.
“With the support of that organisation and Max Salminen, Sweden’s most prominent Olympic sailor and a member of SweMaint’s “Team SWE 33” sponsorship, at the helm, we have great confidence in the future,” says Peter Overup, CEO SweMaint AB, who continues:
“For us at SweMaint, Keep Sweden Tidy Day is a key part and a milestone of our sustainability efforts – and on Saturday, 21 September, it’ll finally be time for action! Bring along your family and friends and join us in our common struggle to make our corner of the world a cleaner place to live in,” Peter Overup concludes.
