As a continuing part of SweMaint AB’s strategic long-term efforts to lay a stronger foundation for the competitiveness of rail freight, Northern Europe's leading supplier of repair and maintenance services for freight wagons is once again setting the bar higher for service.
SweMaint is now adding four new heavy service trucks to its nationwide resources at 40 mobile units from Malmö in the south to Luleå in the north, each of which is capable of highly extensive operations out on the rails 24/7.
The custom-made trucks are biodiesel ready, have four axles and are driven by the two rear axles. The trucks are also equipped with a 92-tonne metre crane with a hydraulic arm length based on four extensions totalling 11.1 m. Additionally, the crane is fitted with the Power Link double linkage system, which makes it equally strong regardless of the arm position. The truck flatbeds have space for six wheel pairs, are equipped with their own power unit and house several tool boards and cabinets.
The service trucks, which are the result of in-depth collaboration between Scania, truck fitter Gehab and SweMaint, are estimated to all be in service as of the week beginning on 25 November (week 48). The first truck was already delivered recently and now serves as the backbone of SweMaint’s mobile service unit in Umeå. In turn, new trucks will follow at the wagon workshops in Gävle, Hallsberg and finally in Borlänge. The total amount of the investment for SweMaint is approximately SEK 16 million.
“The four trucks are key parts of our plan and our ongoing efforts to enhance our offering to our customers. Our mobile operations not only increase our reach and availability but also cut lead times, while, ultimately, also freeing up space and capacity in our stationary workshops, which benefits work better suited to these workshops,” says Peter Overup, CEO, SweMaint, who has ultimate responsibility for the procurement of these trucks.
In connection with the truck upgrade at the Umeå unit, the good old truck with the 78-tonne metre crane is being relocated from Umeå to the recently acquired wagon workshop in Ånge. For obvious reasons, the new addition of the old service truck will make for a strategically powerful service combo when paired with the 3-track workshop for corrective maintenance, the track earmarked specifically for VPI preventive maintenance wagons and the outdoor tracks in the workshop area for mobile rapid repairs.
